Eat Just founder on the US launch of cell-cultivated chicken

Josh Tetrick’s Eat Just is at the vanguard of the nascent cell-cultivated chicken industry in the US. Last month, Eat Just’s Good Meat was one of the first two businesses to receive clearance to sell cell-based chicken in the country. The company described the approval as a “watershed moment for the burgeoning cultivated meat, poultry and seafood sector, and for the global food industry”.

Marion Nestle shines light on UK ultra-processed food report

Marion Nestle, the renowned US public-health advocate, this week reflected on the publication in the UK of a scientific report into ultra-processed foods. The UK’s Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition (SACN) released a study into the foods, concluding “increased consumption of (ultra-) processed foods was associated with increased risks of adverse health outcomes”.

It added: “However, there are uncertainties around the quality of evidence available. Studies are almost exclusively observational and confounding factors or key variables such as energy intake, body mass index, smoking and socioeconomic status may not be adequately accounted for.”

UK farmers’ body supports call for improved domestic food security

Russia’s abandonment of the Black Sea Grain deal has roiled commodity markets and re-intensified discussions about food security, principally in the developing world. However, the issue of food security and domestic production remains a talking point in the UK, not least in the wake of Brexit. Minette Batters, the president of the UK’s National Farmers’ Union, supported comments posted by a senior Conservative Party politician (ironically a prominent Brexiteer) that called for more backing for UK farmers.

Shrinkflation in Canada

Like markets around the world, Canada has seen elevated levels of food inflation in recent months. This week, Dr. Sylvain Charlebois, director of the Agri-Food Analytics Lab at Dalhousie University in Nova Scotia, a frequent commentator on food-industry issues in Canada, promoted new information looking at the subject of shrinkflation in the country.
