Jeffrey Fowle, an American from Ohio, was arrested in May 2014 for leaving a Bible in a public place in North Korea, where Christian evangelism is considered a crime. The father of three was released in October the same year.
In an interview with the Atavist magazine, Fowle said that he was detained at first on the 36th floor of Yanggakdo Hotel in Pyongyang, where he could only access three state-run TV channels, and later at a guesthouse where his movement was restricted. He was served meals of rice, broth and kimchi, he recalled.
Fowle, along with two other American detainees, had given interviews to international media outlets during captivity. In an interview with CNN, monitored and recorded by local officials, Fowle said he did not have complaints about how he had been treated since his arrest.
