For weeks, Saquon Barkley was looking for a new contract from the New York Giants after they used their franchise tag on him earlier this offseason.
July 17 was the deadline for a new deal to be agreed to, and that deadline passed without a deal.
Barkley will have to play the 2023 season on the franchise tag, but according to Adam Schefter, he isn’t expected to report to training camp, and it is unknown when he will join his teammates.
With no long-term deal being reached today, Saquon Barkley is not expected to report to training camp with the rest of his team. The Giants are not expected to see Barkley until later this summer, if then. Barkley will have decisions to make as to when he is willing to report. https://t.co/NBf7ywtuzU

Barkley is New York’s only bona fide threat on offense, even though they added tight end Darren Waller, who has gone over the 1,100-yard mark twice, this offseason.
They were able to surprise the league in 2022 by winning six of their first seven games and upsetting the 13-4 Minnesota Vikings in the Wild Card round, but they did so with an offense that was mediocre overall and struggled to move the chains via the pass.
However, the Giants did rank fourth in rushing yards and rushing touchdowns, and Barkley’s 1,312 yards and 10 touchdowns on the ground was a big reason for that success.
If they were to lose him next offseason, they would be in a world of trouble, especially given the fact that they have given out big bucks to quarterback Daniel Jones and defensive lineman Dexter Lawrence on new contracts this offseason.
Although the Giants won the Super Bowl in the 2007 and 2011 seasons, they have won a grand total of just one playoff game over the last 20-plus years other than those two championship campaigns.
