Not so long ago, NBA teams were trying to tank to get Karl-Anthony Towns, the undisputed best prospect in his class.
Fast forward to today, and even though the 27-year-old has posted some solid numbers, it doesn’t seem like he’s going to get much better than he is nowadays, and his stats haven’t exactly contributed to a lot of winning since he entered the league.
Add the Rudy Gobert trade to that mix, and it’s clear that the Minnesota Timberwolves will need to explore every option to balance out their roster in the future.
With that in mind, NBA insider Ian Begley revealed on Zach Lowe’s podcast that there were some talks about a potential trade for Towns, although it’s still unclear whether the Timberwolves were actively trying to move him somewhere else:
“There were talks between the Timberwolves and other teams before the draft and Towns’ name came up,” said Begley, per RealGm. “I don’t know how aggressive the Timberwolves were with Towns, if at all.”
There’s no doubt that Towns is a talented big man who could help another team take a leap forward.
But he’s entering the first year of a massive supermax extension worth $224 million, and the Timberwolves have already locked up Anthony Edwards for the future.
He didn’t seem like a natural fit alongside Gobert, even if he could slide to the power forward spot thanks to his shooting ability.
Some have also questioned his character, and he’s struggled with injuries as of late, which could also be another factor that could complicate a trade.
But with Gobert being virtually untradeable and Edwards becoming their new franchise star, they might be forced to dump him and his huge salary sooner rather than later.
