One of the more redeeming qualities of the NBA is its willingness to be proactive when it comes to implementing rule changes to adjust to the natural evolution of basketball.
This coming season, the league will institute two new rules, according to insider Shams Charania.
One rule change will attempt to address and alleviate the long-standing issue of flopping, while another will essentially be a slight expansion of the coach’s challenge rule.
Just in: The NBA Board of Governors has approved two new gameplay changes for the 2023-24 season, per sources:
– In-game penalty for flops resulting in technical foul free throw
– A second coach’s challenge awarded if first challenge is successful— Shams Charania (@ShamsCharania) July 11, 2023
Several years ago, the NBA announced it would start penalizing players that flopped during games, but enforcement of that rule never really materialized.
Flopping has been a problem league-wide for many years, and it is something that often draws the ire of fans, to the point where it has made some lose their passion for the league.
The second rule change has apparently come in response to increasing calls from fans and analysts to not penalize a team that wins a coach’s challenge.
Ever since the NBA started allowing coaches to challenge a call that was made during a game, each team was only allowed one challenge each game.
But now, winning a challenge will earn that team another challenge it can use later in the same contest.
That rule change seems to more closely mirror the way the NFL has implemented coach’s challenges over the years, as it gave each team two challenges to use in each game.
