White Tanks Worth Buying – Living in Yellow

You know what is hard to shop for?! A good white tank. They are a staple piece in any wardrobe, so we want them to be G-O-O-D, right? Right. Whether you want them layered under a favorite cardigan, paired with your new hot pink floral statement pants, thrown on for a quick trip to the grocery store, or worn for a classic “white tank and denim” moment…we needed to know which white tanks were worth adding to our closets! LIY put 11 to the test to let you know which are worth the purchase and which are a hard pass! However, we have added noteworthy features of each tank just in case you have a different preference than we did in what you’re looking for. SPOILER: Our favorite overall tank is only $7.50 currently!

Let’s talking sizing reference! Erin is 5’4″ and wearing size small and LIY Ambassador Lisa is 5’3″ and also wearing size small. Here’s what we tested on the tanks:

  • Sheerness Scale: 1 being “THAT IS SEE THROUGH” to 5 being “I’m nice & covered”
  • Overall fit
  • Overall quality and feel
  • Appearance
  • Regular Bra Friendly or not (note: Erin doesn’t mind just “tucking” bra straps, so wasn’t a big deciding factor for her)

Pro Tip: Did you know that wearing bright white bras under white tees and tanks isn’t always the best? Real Simple magazine taught us that you are better off wearing deep burgundy/maroon shades under white tees because the color blends with the skin better — who knew? With that said, Lisa is wearing the (oh so loved) Eby Bra [use code livinginyellow for 15% off – p.s. 7 women with different bra sizes tried it and shared our thoughts here] and Erin is in a maroon option from Third Love!

Curious about the BEST white tee? Find out all the need-to-know info here! Now, let’s compare some tanks friends…

Noteworthy: This tank has a flowy fit, soft feel, and would be nice for sleep! p.s. usually on sale

Noteworthy: If you’re looking for a long, legging friendly option – this would be a good one for that! However, between it feeling tighter in the chest and feeling like there was too much fabric going on, this tank was not at the top of the list!

Noteworthy: This tank has more of a heathered look. It’s not form fitting, is more of a “boxy” fit, and has a deeper V than some other we tried!

Noteworthy: While this tank was one of the least sheer of any we tried, it wasn’t a yes from either of us! However, it’s a great price and is also currently on sale!

Noteworthy: While this tank was more on the sheer side, it was still one we both said we would purchased based on the overall fit and feel! It is a longer option and has a slub cotton feel.

Noteworthy: We might not wear this tank stand alone based on sheerness. However, we both prefer this ribbed material overall for tanks and for $6 it’s worth having in your closet!

Noteworthy: Currently on sale under $10! From the seam down the back to the ribbed material, we loved the look and feel of this tank!

Noteworthy: This tank is more form fitting, ribbed, and is a great option for athleisure! It has more of a workout, spandex material.

Noteworthy: Currently on sale under $10! This tank has a slub, casual, baseball game wearing feel. We didn’t love the lower cut under the arms and the fit wasn’t an overall favorite!

Noteworthy: WINNER, WINNER! BONUS it’s only $7.50 right now [yes, please!] This tank is great if you have a shorter torso or want a tank without all of the extra fabric, but isn’t cropped! We loved the comfortable ribbed material and overall fit!

Noteworthy: If legging friendly, tall, or long torso are on your checklist for a must-have tank, then this one will be your jam! You can also tuck it [as shown in the photo] if that’s more of the styling look you’re going for. Fun details are the raw edge and ribbed material!
