No fanbase in the NBA is happier about the direction of their franchise right now than the San Antonio Spurs, who recently selected French superstar Victor Wembanyama with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft.
Wembanyama has been the consensus top pick in this year’s draft for quite some time, with everyone believing he’ll be an instant superstar in the league and a player that can turn around a franchise immediately.
Many believe Wembanyama is the best NBA prospect since LeBron James in 2003, which will be hard to live up to, but the Spurs are confident he can do just that.
Along with celebrating the arrival of Wembanyama, Spurs fans can also celebrate the past today, with it being the anniversary of the team’s first title with Tim Duncan and David Robinson leading the charge in San Antonio via StatMuse.
24 years ago today, Tim Duncan and David Robinson won their first NBA Finals in just 5 Games:

This was the first of five titles won by the Spurs with Duncan as the face of their franchise, who was recently inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame for his accomplishments in San Antonio.
With Duncan giving the blueprint for how to win championships consistently and lead a team for nearly two decades, Wembanyama will try to follow in his footsteps and will be able to do that with Gregg Popovich helping him along the way.
Even though Popovich said years ago he’d walk off into the sunset with Duncan, the legendary head coach is still doing his thing in San Antonio and seems excited about the future with Wembanyama ready to be the league’s next superstar.
