On Saturday, the St. Louis Cardinals dropped a tough game in London against their hated rivals in the Chicago Cubs, losing 9-1.

Due to their struggles this season, some have begun to speculate that the team may ultimately end up selling at the trade deadline and commencing a rebuild.

However, President of Baseball Operations John Mozeliak maintained his stance on the issue, saying that there are currently no plans for the Cardinals to engage in a rebuild.

Instead, he stated that the goal remains the same, which is for them to add players and improve the roster for a potential stretch run.

The Cardinals are currently languishing in the basement of the NL Central, as they have been for much of the season.

Still, Mozeliak appears intent on adding to the club and making improvements rather than ultimately selling at the deadline.

The Cardinals haven’t been sellers at the deadline since 2018, when they traded reliever Sam Tuivailala and outfielder Tommy Pham.

They still managed to finish that season with a record of 88-74, barely missing the postseason.

During Mozeliak’s tenure in the front office, 2018 was the only time the Cardinals were deadline sellers.

Mozeliak was active at last year’s trade deadline, acquiring veteran starters Jordan Montgomery and Jose Quintana.

The obvious issues for St. Louis are with the pitching staff, most notably the starting rotation, which lacks a true ace.

The bullpen is also hurting with closer Ryan Helsley on the injured list.

With a few weeks until the deadline, it will be interesting to see what St. Louis decides to do.
