The biggest question for the San Francisco 49ers with training camp looming is what progress has quarterback Trey Lance made from last season and who will be the starter under center come Week 1 on the road against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Currently, the consensus seems to be that second-year quarterback Brock Purdy will be the team’s starter once he’s healthy and ready to go.

However, Lance will have to compete during training camp for the second spot on the depth chart, with the team bringing in veteran Sam Darnold during the offseason for some insurance at the position, especially after what happened last year with injuries.

There has been no clear-cut favorite to land that second spot or the starting position if Purdy can’t go in Week 1, which means this is an important time for Lance as he must prove his worth, and superstar tight end George Kittle sees a boost in confidence from the former first-round pick via The Jim Rome Show.

Ultimately, it is Purdy’s job to lose, as head coach Kyle Shanahan has made clear multiple times throughout the offseason, but Lance has a chance to make some noise if he can have a solid training camp.

It’ll be interesting to see how things pan out for the 49ers at the quarterback position, with training camp bound to be entertaining with Darnold and Lance going head to head while Purdy works on getting healthy for the season opener.

When the quarterback situation is handled, the 49ers will be a force to be reckoned with once again as one of the few teams to beat in the NFC.
