Ralph Twitchell, a founding member of the Sarasota School of Architecture, a regional style of postwar modernism, and a mentor to Paul Rudolph and other midcentury architects, designed this house and several of its neighbors fairly early in his career. It is about a five-minute drive from the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art, and about 15 minutes from downtown Sarasota. Sarasota Bay is a few blocks away, and this house comes with a deeded boat slip.

Size: 2,365 square feet

Price per square foot: $740

Indoors: A brick path winds across a wide lawn to the front door, which opens into a foyer with Spanish-style tiles and a staircase to the second floor.

The tile floors continue through an arched doorway into a living room with an original fireplace and two sets of French doors that open to a patio. Through another arched doorway is a dining room open to an updated kitchen with walnut cabinets, marble counters and stainless steel appliances. Off this space is a family room with a built-in entertainment center and white-painted, beamed ceilings and paneled walls. A powder room is also in this part of the house.

The primary suite, off the second-floor landing, includes two bedrooms, one with a stucco fireplace and the other used as a sitting room; an en suite bathroom with a walk-in shower; and a spacious balcony that overlooks the backyard and has views of Sarasota Bay.

The guest room next door has enough space for a queen-size bed. It has an en suite bathroom with a combined tub and shower.

The guesthouse is configured as a one-bedroom apartment, with a separate bedroom and living room, a full bathroom, a kitchen and a private patio.

Outdoor space: The main patio behind the house is covered, with a dining area and space for a barbecue on one side and a lounge area cooled by a ceiling fan on the other. The backyard includes a lawn and a cocktail pool with decorative tile work. The detached garage holds two cars.

Taxes: $14,350 (estimated)

This house is less than a mile from the center of town, putting it within a five-minute drive or a 20-minute walk of the public library, a coffee shop, a bar and a restaurant serving locally brewed beers. It is even closer to the cemetery where President Martin Van Buren is buried and to his home, now a historic site run by the National Park Service.

Albany is about half an hour away. Driving across the Massachusetts state line to Pittsfield or Great Barrington, in the Berkshires, takes less than an hour. New York City is about a three-hour drive.

Size: 4,500 square feet

Price per square foot: $400

Indoors: The house is set back from the street, behind a long driveway and a yard shaded by mature trees.

The front door opens into a center hall with formal spaces on either side, a common floor plan in homes of this period. To the right is a living room with moss-green walls, an original fireplace and six-over-six windows with handblown glass panes. To the left is a dining room with more green walls, more six-over-six windows, another original fireplace and a modernist chandelier. A powder room is also off the foyer.

The kitchen, off the dining room, has Belgian tile floors, a glossy black Aga range with a green-tile backsplash, another modernist pendant light and enough room for a small table and chairs. Behind the kitchen is a sunny family room that has access to a screened porch used for dining during the warmer months.

A staircase with simple wood balustrades leads from the foyer to all five bedrooms on the second floor. The primary bedroom, at the top of the stairs, overlooks the property and the orchard beyond. This bedroom and two more off the hallway all have en suite bathrooms. A corridor extends from the hall to a guest wing with two more bedrooms and another full bathroom.

Outdoor space: In addition to the screened porch, the house has a patio that faces the backyard and the swimming pool, which is framed by grass and enclosed by a fence. The yard is surrounded by mature trees. The detached garage has two parking spots.

Taxes: $15,553 (estimated)

This house was extensively remodeled in 2018, a project that saw the addition of several bedrooms, a screened porch and a finished lower level. It is half a mile from the bustling 12 South neighborhood and 12th Avenue South, the main drag, which is lined with restaurants and boutiques. Sevier Park, which has a playground, a farmers’ market and a community center, is less than five minutes away by car. Driving to Music Row or Vanderbilt University takes about 10 minutes.

Size: 4,664 square feet

Price per square foot: $375

Indoors: A paved path leads to the covered entry. The front door opens directly into a bright living room with a fireplace and hardwood floors that continue into the dining area.

Beyond the dining area is a kitchen with white cabinetry, stone counters, a center island, stainless steel appliances and access to a spacious pantry. The kitchen is open to an expansive family room with enough room for separate sitting and eating spaces. A half bathroom and a screened porch are also in this part of the house.

Two bedrooms, one used as a home office, are on this level, off a hallway extending from the living room. They share a full bathroom with a walk-in shower.

Three more bedrooms are on the second floor, reached by a staircase in the hallway. The primary suite includes a bedroom that has vaulted ceilings and is big enough to hold a king-size bed; a sizable walk-in closet; and a bathroom with a walk-in shower and separate soaking tub. The other two bedrooms also have vaulted ceilings; they share a bathroom with a combined tub and shower.

The basement level, which has polished concrete floors, is used by the sellers as a home gym and playroom. Another full bathroom and a dog-washing station are also on this level.

Outdoor space: The screened porch has two ceiling fans and wood floors, and functions as an outdoor living and dining space with protection from the elements. It has access to a deck that steps down to a patio and the backyard beyond, where there is a small chicken coop.
