After optioning starting pitcher Alek Manoah to the Florida Complex League last week, Blue Jays manager John Schneider provided an update on his status Tuesday.

Ahead of the Blue Jays’ series opener against the Orioles, Schneider told the media that Manoah threw a 72-pitch simulated game Saturday at the club’s Player Development Complex in Dunedin, Fla. Starting in the pitching lab and then moving out to the mound, the simulated game saw Manoah throw five up and downs.

“The pitching lab is part of the plan just to make sure that the deficiencies in the delivery that we’ve recognized are being corrected,” said Blue Jays pitching coach Pete Walker when Manoah was sent down.

Manoah, 25, had struggled to find his form to begin the 2023 season, posting a 6.36 ERA in 13 starts after finishing third in Cy Young voting a year ago.

Schneider also shared that he has kept in regular contact with Manoah while he spends time away from the majors, speaking with the pitcher via FaceTime.
