The Phoenix Suns shocked the NBA world this week after reports that Chris Paul will eventually be waived.
After the 2022-23 NBA season finished for the team, rumors suggested they would try to move Paul in a trade, but now things are different.
Paul is a veteran that is still playing at a high level and can help a contender. Two years ago, he played in the NBA Finals.
While the Los Angeles Lakers, Los Angeles Clippers, and even the Milwaukee Bucks have been mentioned as potential landing spots, one writer has offered an alternative destination for Paul.
Kevin O’Connor of The Ringer believes that Paul would thrive on the young and inexperienced San Antonio Spurs.
“San Antonio would be a fascinating fit, and it’s probably my favorite one overall. Paul could make life easier on offense for Wembanyama and serve as a mentor who can teach him the ways of the pick-and-roll.”
This is an interesting idea for Paul, who is a solid veteran with plenty of knowledge of the game.
He could help Greg Popovich work not only with Victor Wembayama but the rest of the young talent the Spurs are developing.
Clearly, they won’t compete for a championship, but Paul can lay the groundwork for something bigger in the future.
At this point in his career, Paul most likely would rather join a contender than a rebuilding team, but this is definitely an interesting idea.
He already showed he can work with young players in Oklahoma City, even taking that team to the NBA playoffs.
Still, this doesn’t sound that appealing for CP3, whose championship window is closing.
Paul remains a solid player and whoever gets him this offseason, will improve their chances to win.
