For the past month, the St. Louis Cardinals have been carrying three catchers on their roster.

In addition to Willson Contreras and backup catcher Andrew Knizner, they have Tres Barrera on their roster.

However, Barrera has taken just two at-bats this season.

Meanwhile, in Triple-A Memphis, top prospect Jordan Walker, who was shockingly sent down after starting his career with a 12-game hitting streak, is on a roll.

Walker was hitting .274 at the Major League level prior to his demotion.

However, he’s swinging a hot bat in the minors right now.

On Wednesday, Cardinals MLB.com writer John Denton discussed the No. 1 prospect in baseball’s recent surge and expressed hope that the Cardinals might call him up ahead of their weekend series against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Denton started off by saying that Walker was not the issue with the team’s offense when he was sent down to Triple-A.

He also expressed concern that the move to demote him might have done some damage.

Denton revealed that he spoke to Walker’s father recently, who told him that it took the 6-foot-6 slugger a little bit of time to get over what had happened, as he was just as shocked and blindsided by the move as the fanbase was.

The Cardinals writer also called out the organization for not having a clear plan for their top prospect and former first-round draft pick, saying that it was unwise for them to send him down.

Denton closed his statement by saying that even if Walker is hitting ground balls, he would give any lineup in the Majors a boost.
