With a chance to claim the Bundesliga title on the line, Borussia Dortmund have gone into the half down 2-0 to Mainz.
Goals by Andreas Hanche-Olsen and Karim Onisiwo for Mainz in the 15th and 25th minutes, respectively, have diminished Dortmund’s chances of halting Bayern Munich’s 10-year dominance of German football.
Dortmund’s Sebastien Haller wasted a chance to score when he missed a penalty kick in the 19th minute.
Dortmund entered the match in the driver’s seat, with a win at home over FSV Mainz 05 (currently in ninth place) all that was needed to seal the first Bundesliga championship for the club since 2012.
Elsewhere, Bayern has posted a 1-0 lead over FC Köln at the half. A victory in Cologne, combined with a loss by Dortmund, will give Bayern their 11th consecutive Bundesliga title.
A draw by Dortmund (70 points) would also be good enough for Bayern (68) if it beats Cologne. In that case, both Bayern and Dortmund would be tied on 71 points, but based on a superior goal difference (plus-59 to plus-39), which is the first tiebreaker, the title would remain with the Bavarians.
