Trea Turner hasn’t had the best start to his Philadelphia Phillies tenure, and amid all the vocal displeasure fans have given the shortstop, even his own mother has disapproved of his performance.

After signing an 11-year, $300 million free agent contract with the Phillies this past offseason and becoming a Team USA star during the World Baseball Classic, Turner entered Wednesday’s game against Arizona Diamondbacks batting just over .250 with four home runs and 11 RBI. Earlier this week, Turner admitted he has “sucked.”

After starting Wednesday’s game 0-for-4, Turner had one of his biggest swings in a Phillies uniform in the bottom of the ninth inning, hitting a game-tying home run to send the game into extras, during which Philadelphia would later win.

But after the game, Turner was asked about his seventh inning at-bat, when he struck out swinging on a ball in the dirt and was met with heavy boos from the fans at Citizens Bank Park. He said his mom “prepared me for anything in this game” and has been tough on him from an early age. He even heard the boos from her.

“She actually texted me and said ‘good game, except for your fourth at-bat.’ I said ‘yeah, not a good one,’ and she said ‘I was booing you,'” Turner said.

Turner is now hitting .250 with five home runs and 13 RBI.
