It’s been an amazing season for the NFL with many exciting games and announcements. Sports bettors were able to participate in NFL integration thanks to BetMGM. And now, the Toronto Argonauts are sending Bethel-Thompson off on a triumphant note. The seasoned quarterback made the USFL’s New Orleans Breakers his new team for 2023 on social media. After contributing to Toronto’s victory in the ’22 Grey Cup, Bethel-Thompson became a free agent in early February.
Bethel-Thompson Comments on His Departure from CFL
Bethel-Thompson posted on his Instagram account that his new adventure starts with the USFL’s New Orleans Breakers and will then continue with major NFL interest in the autumn. He stated that this has nothing to do with CFL. He declared his admiration for the CFL. He could not pass up the chance to combine family and football while playing in the United States this season.
The USFL season begins on April 15. On April 16, the Breakers will host the Pittsburgh Maulers. The announcement by Bethel-Thompson received no immediate response from The Argos.
The choice made by Bethel-Thompson is not unexpected. He talked about how difficult it was for him to not see his partner, Chinaka, and his small daughter, Aziza, for extended periods of time during the CFL season after Toronto’s 24-23 championship victory against Winnipeg in November. Family played a major role in the decision.
According to Bethel-Thompson, the hardest part of playing football is the time you give up on family and friends.
The 34-year-old American played with Toronto for the last five seasons (2017–19, 2021–2022) and won a Grey Cup in his debut season there as veteran Ricky Ray’s back-up.
Last season, the 6 ‘4 ft, 220-pounder Bethel-Thompson passed for 4,731 yards, a CFL and career-best, with 15 interceptions and 23 touchdowns. He led Toronto (11-7) to a second consecutive East Division championship before completing 19 of his 27 passes for 300 yards and two touchdowns in the Argos’ 34-27 final triumph against the Montreal Alouettes.
Toronto will now play in the Grey Cup versus strongly favored Winnipeg. When Bethel-Thompson dislocated his right thumb late in the fourth quarter, he had completed 15 of 28 passes for 203 yards.
In 2021, Bethel-Thompson solidified his position as Toronto’s starter by winning seven of the team’s nine starts, guiding Toronto to a 9-5 record and first-place finish in the East Division. It was the first time since 2017 that the Argos won the conference.
