The New York Rangers have permission to interview Toronto Maple Leafs assistant coach Spencer Carbery for their vacant head coaching job, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reports.

The Rangers cut ties with Gerard Gallant after they lost in the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs against the New Jersey Devils.

Friedman reports the Anaheim Ducks and Washington Capitals, who also have head coaching vacancies, also are believed to be talking to Carbery.

Leafs head coach Sheldon Keefe has one year left on his contract, though his future with the organization is uncertain. General manager Kyle Dubas’ contract expires this summer and it also is unclear if he will return.

Carbery, 41, has worked for the Capitals organization in the ECHL as a head coach for South Carolina and in the AHL as a head coach for Hershey.

Carbery was Hershey’s head coach for three years before joining the Leafs as an assistant in 2021-22.

The Victoria native also spent one year in the OHL as head coach of the Saginaw Spirit in 2016-17.
