Rosie O’Donnell Lists Her Manhattan Penthouse (as Malibu Beckons?)

Rosie O’Donnell is bidding farewell to New York City, at least for the time being.

The comedian, actress and serial real estate buyer has decided to sell her last remaining Manhattan property: a sprawling penthouse in the Turtle Bay neighborhood with an immense rooftop terrace and stunning East River vistas.

Ms. O’Donnell, 61, who was raised on Long Island, recently relocated to the West Coast with her youngest daughter, Dakota, 10. She bought a modern farmhouse for $4.6 million in the Beverlywood neighborhood of Los Angeles in late 2021, though only four months later sold it for a small profit. She is now renting a beachfront home in Malibu, reportedly near the actor Fran Drescher.

Ms. O’Donnell has bought and sold numerous properties in Manhattan and up and down the Eastern Seaboard. These have included homes in Greenwich, Conn.; Saddle River, N.J.; Nyack, N.Y.; Miami Beach; and West Palm Beach, Fla. The Turtle Bay apartment, one of two penthouses in the Sterling Plaza condominium, at 255 East 49th Street near Second Avenue, is on the market for $8.3 million, according to the listing broker, Paul Anand of Brown Harris Stevens. Monthly common charges are $4,784. Ms. O’Donnell paid $8 million in 2017 for the unit, which had served as her primary residence.

The nearly 3,600-square-foot apartment, on the red brick tower’s top two floors, has four bedrooms and three full bathrooms, plus a 1,620-square-foot terrace on the roof, where there is also an enclosed 120-square-foot pantry and kitchenette. (Mr. Anand says the penthouse is being marketed as a duplex, not a triplex, despite this extra room.)

“The crown jewel of the property is the terrace, with its 360-degree views of Manhattan’s Chrysler Building, the Empire State Building and East River,” Mr. Anand said. “It’s like a private oasis. And it’s what sold Rosie on the apartment.”

Ms. O’Donnell also appreciated the top-to-bottom renovations undertaken by the previous owners, he said, as well as its high-end finishes, like the imported Russian wide-plank oak floors, marble bathrooms and Boffi kitchen. Sound and lighting systems were also installed.

“It was turnkey condition,” Mr. Anand said, “and the new owners won’t have to do anything to it, either.”

The main level of the home is on the top 33rd floor. A small entryway leads to a great room, where there is a living room area with a honed black granite wood-burning fireplace and a formal dining area with cozy window seats and an onyx-clad wet bar with a wine refrigerator and a sink. Centrally located is a sculptured, curvy staircase.

“It’s perfect for entertaining,” Mr. Anand said of the layout, “and you can take your guests up the stairs to the terrace.”

At the opposite end of the floor is a large eat-in kitchen. “You get two of every top-of-the-line appliance,” Mr. Anand said, noting the Gaggenau refrigerators, including one for wine, and the Miele ovens and dishwashers. There is also a 33-foot-long center island/breakfast bar, Corian countertops and an integrated espresso and cappuccino maker.

Near the kitchen is a bedroom and bathroom.

The primary bedroom suite, measuring 14.5-by-20 feet, is down a separate hallway near the entrance to the apartment. It has a wall of closets and an en suite bathroom with a steam shower and soaking tub.

On the floor below is another bathroom, a sauna and two more bedrooms, one of which comes with a walk-in closet and a balcony.

The rooftop terrace has areas carved out for dining and lounging.

Ms. O’Donnell, a former host of “The View,” more recently starred in the Showtime drama series “American Gigolo,” which was filmed in the Los Angeles area. Over the years, she has bought and sold numerous properties up and down the Eastern Seaboard. These have included homes in Greenwich, Conn.; Saddle River, N.J.; Nyack, N.Y.; Miami Beach; and West Palm Beach, Fla. (The West Palm house was just six miles away from former President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort. Ms. O’Donnell and Mr. Trump have famously feuded for years.)

Her transactions in Manhattan have included the 2014 sale of another duplex penthouse, at 130 West 12th Street in Greenwich Village, and last year a one-bedroom, one-bathroom apartment at 350 West 53rd Street in Hell’s Kitchen, which she had used as a pied-à-terre.

Judging by her frequent Instagram and TikTok posts, it looks like Ms. O’Donnell’s next real estate purchase might be in Malibu.

“I gotta say, I love it here so much,” she recently told her followers, showing off the direct ocean views and picturesque sunsets from her balcony. “It’s beautiful here. It really is.”
