With the news that reliever Lou Trivino will be undergoing Tommy John surgery to repair elbow ligament damage, the New York Yankees‘ 2022 trade deadline took yet another hit.

Back then, GM Brian Cashman was praised for acquiring several several impact players without surrendering the organization’s top three prospects: Anthony Volpe, Oswald Peraza and Jasson Dominguez.

He brought in two impact relievers in Lou Trivino and Scott Effross, a game-changing defensive wizard in center fielder Harrison Bader, a bonafide mid-rotation stalwart in Frankie Montas, and starting outfielder Andrew Benintendi.

Well, here is how those acquisitions have gone so far:

“Revisiting the #Yankees‘ 2022 Trade Deadline pickups: Andrew Benintendi: Season-ending injury Sept. 2; Scott Effross: Tommy John surgery October ’22; Harrison Bader: Missed all of April 2023; Frankie Montas: Shoulder surgery Feb. 2023; Lou Trivino: Tommy John surgery May 3,” Yankees insider Bryan Hoch tweeted.

Yikes.

Montas had a 6.35 ERA in limited action with the Yankees last year, but he was already hurt and eventually had surgery in February.

He could still contribute, as he may return in August or September, but it’s fair to say his acquisition hasn’t gone the way the Yankees planned.

Trivino and Effross were solid until they got hurt, and the same can be said about Benintendi.

Only Bader was a true difference-maker in October, but he strained his oblique in spring training 2023 and missed the first month.

He is now ready to return to the lineup.

For the rest of the deadline acquisitions, their time as a Yankee will be remembered by physical ailments and not on-field performance.

It’s not their fault.

Baseball can be a cruel game sometimes.
