Lately, there have been whispers that the San Francisco 49ers may end up trading quarterback Trey Lance.
He began last season as their starter, but an ankle injury prematurely ended his year in Week 2, plus a season-ending foot injury to Jimmy Garoppolo resulted in Brock Purdy becoming their starter moving forward.
Furthermore, another reason for such rumors is the fact that the 49ers have brought in Sam Darnold to provide another option in their QB room.
NFL insider Ian Rapoport says that trading Lance would make sense because it would be a bad look if he, the No. 3 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, ended up being the team’s third-string quarterback.

Many feel San Francisco traded to get that No. 3 pick and took Lance in the first place because they weren’t fully sold on Garoppolo being a championship signal-caller.
He had led them to Super Bowl LIV, but despite holding a 20-10 lead in the fourth quarter, the Niners ended up losing to Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs.
Lance has played just eight games in the NFL thus far, and therefore it is hard to tell what he can realistically become, although plenty feel he has a high ceiling.
Purdy is clearly more ready right now, but he is recovering from surgery on a torn UCL in his throwing elbow, and he may not be ready for Week 1 of the 2023 season.
The 49ers aren’t in a position to develop a young QB such as Lance for a better tomorrow, as they currently possess arguably the best roster in the NFC, if not the entire league.
