The Philadelphia Eagles have bolstered their running back position by acquiring D’Andre Swift from the Detroit Lions.

In exchange for Swift, the Lions acquired a 2025 fourth-round pick and the No. 219 selection in the 2023 NFL Draft while sending the 249th overall pick to Philadelphia.

“A lot of credit goes to Brad Holmes, GM of the Lions, working through this with us and finding a solution there that we could both live with,” Eagles GM Howie Roseman said on ESPN moments after the trade was announced. “Philly kid, St. Joe’s Prep, a kid that we know playing in high school. Obviously, followed him in college – tremendous player, tremendous person. Excited to get him to Philly.

“He’s got big-play ability as a runner and as a receiver. We saw it the first game of the season. He’s got tremendous vision, obviously tremendous character adds to that. We liked our running backs. We didn’t go into the draft feeling like this was a position that we had to have. But we felt like this player was somebody who really adds to our culture and adds to our team.”

Trading Swift seemed inevitable for the Lions after drafting Alabama running back Jahmyr Gibbs with the 12th overall pick on Day 1 of the 2023 NFL Draft. Detroit also signed former Chicago Bears running back David Montgomery in the off-season.

The 24-year-old played a career-high 14 games during the 2022 regular season with 931 yards from scrimmage and eight total touchdowns.

During his three-year career in Detroit, Swift totaled 1,680 yards and 18 touchdowns rushing. As a pass catcher, he hauled in 156 of his 205 targets for 1,198 yards and seven more touchdowns.
