Report: Ja Morant’s hand x-rays come back negative, status uncertain vs. Lakers

Further testing and x-rays show that Memphis Grizzlies star point guard Ja Morant did not sustain any breaks or fractures to his right hand after exiting Sunday’s playoff game against the Los Angeles Lakers with an injury, sources tell The Athletic’s Shams Sharania.

The ailment is considered a “significant pain tolerance injury” and Morant’s status for Game 2 still remains uncertain, Sharania adds.

Morant left Game 1 in the fourth quarter after landing hard on his right hand following a collision with Lakers big man Anthony Davis while going for a layup.

The fourth-year guard rushed to the locker room and though he returned to the team’s bench near the end of the game, he was wearing a black pad and was unable to check back in.

After the contest, Morant said that his status is “in jeopardy” and, according to ESPN’s Tim MacMahon, he was struggling to use his right hand to undo a balled-up pair of socks.

Morant’s been dealing with injuries throughout the year, from ankle issues earlier in the season to a thigh injury in early January. He also missed nine games in March for disciplinary reasons. In total, the guard missed 21 games this season.

The Grizzlies will look to tie their best-of-seven series with the Lakers at 1-1 when Game 2 tips off on Wednesday night.
