Ever since Elon Musk purchased Twitter for $44 billion a few months ago, the social media platform has gone through some drastic changes, which many people who use the platform frequently haven’t exactly agreed with.

One of Musk’s most significant changes is charging users to have a verified blue check mark next to their name, which generally would indicate the public figure actually being the right person and not a parody account.

This used to be a free thing that only required some verification requirements by the user, but now you have to pay for that privilege, and that has sparked outrage from athletes like Kansas City Chiefs superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

Mahomes and wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling are clearly having fun with Twitter’s new policy.

The two-time Super Bowl champion saying he couldn’t afford to pay for the entire Chiefs squad to get blue marks is comical, to say the least, but it’s also a bit ridiculous that this is now a paid service.

Even Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James had a bit of fun at Twitter’s expense on Friday by tweeting out the following:

This isn’t going down well, and it’ll only be a matter of time before we see if Twitter scraps the new verification or continues to run with a service that many seem unwilling to pay for.

It’ll be interesting to see how this impacts the Twitterverse and how athletes interact, and how many times athletes or public figures are mistaken for parody accounts saying ridiculous things.
