For years, NFL fans debated who was actually responsible for the New England Patriots’ success.

Some were positive that Tom Brady was the guy who should get most of the credit, while his haters often claimed that he was carried by his defense, a ‘system quarterback,’ and a product of Bill Belichick’s elite coaching.

Fast forward to today, and the Patriots have struggled mightily since Brady left, while he went on to win a Super Bowl in the very first year he left Foxboro.

That was more than enough to put that debate to rest, as it seems evident that Brady may have had more to do with the dynasty than the coach.

At least, that’s how former NFL star LeSean McCoy thinks, as he recently went on to say that ‘the real Bill Belichick’ showed up as soon as Brady left and that Belichick is nothing more than a .500 coach:

“As soon as Tom Brady left New England and went to Tampa, the real Belichick showed up, and the real Belichick is barely .500 as a coach,” McCoy said on FS1.

That’s a rather bold statement, but he’s not wrong, at least when it comes to the numbers.

Belichick is 79-88 without Brady in his career, and Brady went 32-18 without the legendary coach at the helm.

Of course, everything must be put into context, and jumping to conclusions might not be fair for Belichick; he’s earned his stripes in this league.

But the early returns are sure making everybody think that he may not have been as successful without the GOAT at QB, and time will only tell whether his legacy should have an asterisk next to it or not.
