‘I miss the WBC mercy rule’: Astros wrap spring training with 24-1 rout of Cardinals

The Houston Astros appear ready to defend their 2022 World Series championship.

On the final Sunday of spring training, the Astros rattled off 20 hits, including three from Yanier Diaz, on their way to a 24-1 drubbing of the St. Louis Cardinals.

Astros’ hitters came out of the gate on fire, scoring three runs in the first and five in the second, knocking Cardinals starter Jack Flaherty out of the game before he could record a sixth out.

Despite the righty returning to throw two scoreless, Houston added on with a five-run fifth, a two-run seventh and a nine-run eighth that saw 14 hitters come to the plate.

Diaz led the way for the Astros’ offence going 3-for-3 with a grand slam, a double and six RBI, while Corey Julks hit a two-run homer of his own and Dixon Machado chipped in three hits as well.

Fourteen different Astros recorded hits in the game and four others that didn’t record a hit reached base with a walk.

Despite the gaudy score total, the game only lasted three hours and nine minutes.

Houston isn’t the only group in regular-season form, as fans across the Twitterverse weighed in on the beatdown. Here are some of the best reactions:
