The Seattle Seahawks were expected to rebuild during the 2022 season, given Russell Wilson’s departure.

However, Geno Smith played better than anticipated, leading the Seahawks to a 9-8 regular season record.

Due to his success, the Seahawks have been faced with a difficult decision regarding Smith’s future with the team.

Recently, Dan Graziano of ESPN reported that the Seahawks are likely to sign Smith to a long-term deal, rather than using the franchise tag on him.

However, if the two sides cannot agree, he could test the FA market.

In his first year as the full-time starter for the Seahawks, Smith proved that he has what it takes to be their starter for 2023 and beyond.

Smith had the eighth-most passing yards in the league in 2022, the fourth-most touchdown passes, and only threw 11 interceptions.

This was fewer interceptions than Josh Allen, Patrick Mahomes, and Joe Burrow.

The Seahawks certainly recognized the value that Smith brought to the organization, which is why they are considering a longer-term deal.

Assuming the team sticks with Smith in 2023, the Seahawks could surround him with additional weapons via their 2023 draft picks.

Pending a trade, the Seahawks hold the fifth and 20th picks in April’s draft.

This class is loaded with wide receiver talent, and the team could pair an impactful player beside DK Metcalf and Tyler Lockett.

They could also add to their young defense, given the number of superstar prospects that should be available for them.

Ultimately, the Seahawks are poised to have an even better season in 2023 than they did in 2022.

Will the team sign Smith to an extension in the coming weeks?
