Nyquist is currently out for the remainder of the regular season with a shoulder injury suffered on Jan. 25 against the Edmonton Oilers, but could return for the playoffs. He had 10 goals and 12 assists in 48 games with the bottom-dwelling Blue Jackets this season.
The 33-year-old, five-foot-five winger is a pending unrestricted free agent with a $5.5-million cap hit.
Drafted in the fourth round in 2008, Nyquist broke out with the Detroit Red Wings in 2013-14 with 28 goals and 20 assists in 57 games.
After eight seasons in Detroit, the Swede was traded to the San Jose Sharks before the 2019 trade deadline. He then signed a four-year deal with the Blue Jackets the ensuing off-season.
The move is Minnesota’s second trade on Tuesday after they acquired winger Marcus Johansson from the Washington Capitals.
