As artificial intelligence (AI) becomes more prevalent in our daily lives, discussions about the potential risks and dangers this evolving technology presents are becoming more common as well. Blockbuster films like James Cameron’s Terminator franchise and Marvel’s The Avengers: Age of Ultron depict AI in a dangerous and cautionary light. However, AI is not all doom and gloom, and if we allow ourselves to take a step back and consider the positive aspects and creative potential of this growing technology, we can see that it could have the power to enhance our lives for the better and help us achieve things we never thought were possible.

As a lifelong Marvel fan, I’ve been awe-inspired by the way characters like Tony Stark and Shuri have used AI to achieve incredible feats. From the infamous Iron Man suit Tony Stark created with assistance from J.A.R.V.I.S. (the precursor to the hero Vision) to the Black Panther suit created by Shuri with the help of her AI assistant Griot, AI has played a powerful role in creativity and innovation in the Marvel Universe and has aided my own acceptance of the creative, innovative and overall potential AI can have in our own reality. With AI being a trending topic, I’ve been looking into the benefits of implementing it into our very traditional creative industry where AI is largely absent. I’m happy to share five key ways I believe it can enhance our work.

Enhancing New Ideas And Concepts

Similar to how J.A.R.V.I.S. aided Tony Stark in testing and elevating his designs and inventions in the Marvel world, AI technology can assist in amplifying ideas and enhancing creativity in humans, particularly in creative industries. I have discovered that ChatGPT, the widely recognized AI software developed by OpenAI, can effectively combat writer’s block for me by providing insightful suggestions that help me surmount creative obstacles. However, it’s important to remember that the program should not be used as the sole source of finalized ideas. Rather, you can use tools like these to further develop them until you have a solid concept that you can use as a foundation. In my opinion, the role of tools like these is not to provide new ideas, but to support and strengthen existing ones.

Streamlining The Creative Process

AI can be used to automate certain tasks and streamline the overall production and development process, which can free up more time for humans to focus on the more creative aspects of a project. This can be especially helpful for artists and designers who may be working on tight deadlines. For example, for video game developers, Modl:test assists with detecting bugs, glitches, performance issues and so on—20 times faster than a human, according to the website. This could allow developers more time to focus on other aspects of the game development process.

Providing New Perspectives

By analyzing data and patterns, AI can provide new perspectives and insights that can inspire fresh thinking and creativity in humans. This is something that we see happening in the Marvel universe with characters like Tony Stark. Salesforce is a perfect example of this, as their Salesforce Einstein software provides real-time recommendations for actions to take so that a person doesn’t have to manually interpret the data to come to these conclusions themselves.

Amplifying Human Creativity

In some cases, AI can actually work alongside humans to amplify their creativity. For example, AI-powered music software such as ChordAI provides the chords and beats for any song, and Musical Inspiration AI can help musicians create new compositions by suggesting chord progressions or melodies that they might not have thought of on their own.

AI has the ability to improve creativity and enable us to accomplish things we previously thought were unimaginable. It can take over routine tasks and allow us to concentrate on imagination and self-expression.

While it’s true that AI may take over certain tasks and skills for creatives, it’s important to remember that it will also open up a whole new world of possibilities and create industries that we can’t even begin to imagine yet. Just think about it: According to the World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs Report, “a shift in the division of labour between humans and machines” could displace around 85 million jobs by 2025. But on the flip side, it could also create a whopping 97 million new jobs in the same timeframe.

For those who fear AI, I want to remind them that it’s still a tool invented by humans, and the notion that AI can be the sole source for ideas is likely far from reality. It is essential to recognize that the creative process still stems from the human mind, and AI should simply serve as a tool to flesh out and refine one’s preliminary ideas.

So as we move forward and continue to advance in the world of AI, I think we should embrace its creative potential and look for ways that it can help us achieve our goals. After all, as Tony Stark once said, “Sometimes you gotta run before you can walk.”
