The San Francisco 49ers have some work to do as far as the quarterback spot.
They have a rookie who played very well after filling in for the injured Jimmy Garoppolo in Brock Purdy, who has an injury himself that will require surgery and possibly put his availability for Week 1 of next season in jeopardy.
They also have Trey Lance, who they gave up lots of draft capital in order to land, and even though he hasn’t played a ton of organized football, he still seems to have lots of potential.
The thinking has been that if Purdy is available for the start of next season, he should be the starter, but there are those who think Lance should at least be given a chance, and NFL analyst Bomani Jones feels the QB1 spot should at least be an open competition.
“If Brock Purdy can do that in this offense, I can’t wait to see what Trey Lance does…If I’m the 49ers, I’m going into training camp giving Lance every opportunity to win this job…anything else to me is stupid.”

Lance has started just four games in his two pro seasons, and he hasn’t put it all together yet.
However, his ceiling appears to be higher than that of Purdy, as he can not only move the chains by himself, but he appears to have the ability to accurately connect on long passes downfield.
Purdy showed admirable poise, mobility, and throwing accuracy while under center for the 49ers this season, but given all the resources they gave up for Lance, some feel it would be foolish to automatically make him languish as a full-time QB2.
Once San Francisco figures out who will be their first true franchise QB since Steve Young, they will be one of the favorites, if not the favorite to represent the NFC in Super Bowl LVIII at Allegiant Stadium in the Las Vegas area.
