Senators’ Forsberg leaves ice on stretcher after Hyman falls on leg

Ottawa Senators goaltender Anton Forsberg left the ice on a stretcher with an apparent leg injury during Saturday’s game against the Edmonton Oilers.

The injury occurred late in the third period when Oilers forward Zach Hyman fell on Forsberg’s leg in front of the net seconds before Ryan Nugent-Hopkins scored to give Edmonton a 6-3 lead.

Forsberg stayed lying on the ice, appearing to be in serious pain, clutching his right knee while awaiting a stretcher. Rookie goalie Mads Sogaard came in to replace Forsberg for the final minutes of Ottawa’s loss.

The 30-year-old Forsberg has a .902 save percentage in 28 games this season. Last season, he backstopped the Senators with a .917 save percentage, earning him a three-year, $8.25-million extension.

The Senators also lost defenceman Jake Sanderson to injury after a hit from Oilers defenceman Vincent Desharnais. Head coach D.J. Smith did not have an update on either player’s status post-game.

The Senators are now without the tandem they assembled in the off-season, as fellow netminder Cam Talbot is out with a lower-body injury.

Talbot, 35, has played in 27 games this season, recording a 11-13-1 record in 24 starts along with a 2.95 goals-against average and .903 save percentage. The Senators acquired the netminder from the Minnesota Wild in exchange for Filip Gustavsson during the offseason.
