McCarthy to Speak on the Debt Limit

Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) will give an address on the debt limit and federal spending in the Capitol at 5:30 p.m., Punchbowl News reports.

“The speech is meant to lay out McCarthy’s position on the debt limit ahead of the State of the Union. Think of it as a ‘prebuttal.’ McCarthy and his aides know that President Joe Biden will talk about the debt limit during the State of the Union Tuesday night, and McCarthy wants to get out ahead of that.”

“Specifically, McCarthy will again lay out why he wants to negotiate a spending package alongside an increase in the $31.4 trillion debt limit. McCarthy plans to reiterate that he doesn’t want to alter Social Security or Medicare as part of any negotiations.”
