Matthews has been dealing with an undisclosed injury that has held him out of Toronto’s last two games against the Nashville Predators and Detroit Red Wings.
According to Leafs head coach Sheldon Keefe, Pontus Holmberg and Bobby McCann are not expected to play Saturday due to illness.
In Matthews’ absence, the Maple Leafs have gone 1-1-0, including a 4-1 loss to the Detroit Red Wings on Thursday night that snapped a nearly four-year unbeaten streak for the Maple Leafs against their division rival.
In 41 games this year, Matthews has 20 goals and 27 assists for 47 points.
