The money has been flowing for players from the Chicago Cubs ownership.
They have spent this offseason signing big-name players to deals for 2023.
However, they also have worked on some contracts with their current roster of players.
But one player has yet to see the money flowing into his pocket.
That player is Nico Hoerner, who is a key part of the Cubs defense heading into 2023.
While there are no contract talks currently, should the Cubs engage in talks and extend Hoerner in 2023?
Hoerner Is A Defensive Gem That The Cubs Need
Hoerner is a player with plenty of positives about him.
While he played shortstop last season, he’s also played second base during his time with the Cubs.
With the signing of shortstop Dansby Swanson, it’s clear Hoerner will head back to second base for 2023.
Having him gives the Cub’s middle of the infield two Gold Glove-worthy players.
Cubs now have Gold Glove caliber defense at four positions.

While he’s yet to win a Gold Glove, he’s been a finalist before when he was at second base.
His defensive abilities make him a gem on the Cubs roster.
However, he’s more than just a defensive gem, as he’s a solid bat in the Cubs lineup.
Last season was proof of how he can give solid production during his plate appearances.
He finished 2022 with 481 at-bats, which led to 135 hits and 55 RBIs.
With his .281 batting average for the season, he was giving the Cubs chances to win every game he played in.
All these things are why the Cubs should extend him in 2023.
