Kevin McCarthy Fails for a Twelfth Time

Kevin McCarthy Fails for a Twelfth Time

After a twelfth round of voting, the House failed once again to elect a speaker.

The vote totals for the twelfth round:

  • Kevin McCarthy – 213
  • Hakeem Jeffries – 211
  • Jim Jordan – 4
  • Kevin Hern – 3
  • Other – 0
  • Present – 0

But the good news for McCarthy is that he appears to have flipped 14 of the holdouts.

However, there were also two McCarthy supporters who were absent for today’s vote. One Democrat was also absent.

On future ballots, assuming all of his backers are present, he will need to flip three of the remaining holdouts to become speaker. They are: Biggs, Boebert, Crane, Gaetz, Good, Harris and Rosendale.

He can win with fewer votes if he can get some of the seven “no” votes to vote present.
