The New York Yankees decided, a few weeks ago, to retain general manager and senior vice president Brian Cashman on a new contract.

However, ownership apparently chose to surround him with veteran MLB executives, as evidenced by some of the organization’s recent hires.

This week, they welcomed former World Series-winning GM Brian Sabean, the architect of the San Francisco Giants 2010-2014 dynasty.

Today, they announced the hire of former Montreal Expos and New York Mets GM Omar Minaya.

Minaya is an experienced executive who knows how to build a team with limited resources, as he did with the Expos back in the day.

He doesn’t have limited resources with the Yankees, that’s for sure, but he also won’t be required to put together a team: he will be a valuable advisor to Cashman.

According to YES Network’s Jack Curry, it’s a solid move by the Yankees for a variety of reasons.

Some of the comments from the Yankees’ announcement on Twitter were fans asking the team to make moves, but there were also some fans praising the decision to bring in Minaya.

There is evidence to back Salazar’s words up:

Others didn’t like the move.

Red Sox fans took advantage of the opportunity to mock the hire for making the Yanks’ front office even “older”:

In the end, it doesn’t hurt to have such a good talent evaluator around.

The Yankees are going all in this year, and that apparently includes the front office, too.

Now, they only need to decide what to do at third base, shortstop, and left field.
