Manchester United is keen on offering a new long-term contract to Diogo Dalot which would tie him to the club beyond his current contract which is set to expire in 2023.
The Portuguese international is having a fine season as he has established himself as a first-choice starter in the right-back position under manager Erik Ten Hag who took over as the manager of the club in the summer.
Diogo Dalot’s career so far
Dalot burst onto the scene with Porto after coming through their youth academy setup, the 23-year-old initially played for the Porto B team where he went on to make 23 appearances for them. His eye-catching performances for the B team saw the right-back being promoted to the senior team where he spent an entire season with them (2017-2018). Despite the promotion, Dalot had made only 8 appearances for the senior team.
In 2018 Manchester United acquired the Portuguese international for a transfer fee of £19 million, the club utilized him on different occasions throughout the next two seasons and he made 34 appearances for them in all competitions. The Premier League giants sporadically used him in the 2020-21 season hence a move to AC Milan would materialize for the defender and the sole objective of completing the transfer was to hand Dalot more playing time.
The 23-year-old had an instant impact at AC Milan as he made 33 appearances for them and scored 2 goals in the process. Manchester United was pleased with his performances at AC Milan during the loan spell hence when he returned to United he was deployed as a right-back regularly. Since 2018 Dalot has made over 85 appearances for the Red Devils where he has found the back of the net twice.
Dalot has been impressive under Ten Hag and the club sees him to be a very important defensive asset going forward hence they are looking to offer a long-term contract that will tie him to the club beyond 2023 (via Sports Mole).
When Ten Hag took charge as United’s manager he said that players will be offered new contracts depending on their performances this season. At halfway through the season, the players that would initially be handed a contract extension would be Marcus Rashford, Fred, Luke Shaw, and Diogo Dalot.
