AUSTIN – Bijan Robinson is taking his talents to the next level.

After three seasons at Texas, Robinson announced on Monday that he will enter the 2023 NFL Draft. The six-foot, 222-pound running back had two years of eligibility left at Texas. He won’t play in the Alamo Bowl on Dec. 29.

Robinson is regarded as a possible first-round pick in this upcoming spring’s draft. Mock drafts published this past week by ESPN, CBS Sports and USA TODAY’s Draft Wire predicted that Robinson will be the fifth, 10th and 25th selection in April.

No Texas running back has been drafted since D’Onta Foreman, who was a third-round pick in 2017. Cedric Benson was the last first-round pick to emerge from the UT backfield. Benson was taken with the fourth pick in the 2005 NFL Draft.

Robinson signed with Texas during the 2020 recruiting cycle and the five-star prospect quickly lived up to the hype. Robinson received only 86 rushing attempts as a freshman, but his average of 8.2 yards per carry that season is a school record.

Upon the arrival of Steve Sarkisian ahead of the 2021 campaign, Robinson received a heavier workload. He rushed 195 times for 1,127 yards and 11 touchdowns while appearing in 10 of UT’s 12 games.

This season, Robinson has rushed for 1,580 yards. That ranks fifth nationally. No FBS-level player has combined for more rushing and receiving yards than Robinson, who has turned 19 catches into 314 yards. He has scored 20 total touchdowns.

Robinson also won the 2022 Doak Walker Award, which is given annually to the nation’s top running back, earlier this month. He finished ninth in the voting for the Heisman Trophy.

Robinson leaves UT with the fourth-most rushing yards in school history. Those 3,410 rushing yards trail just Ricky Williams (6,279), Cedric Benson (5,540) and Earl Campbell (4,443). Williams, Benson and Campbell all played four seasons at Texas.
