The San Diego Padres have already begun constructing their roster for the 2023 season.

After a brutal NLCS loss to the Philadelphia Phillies, the Padres chose to add to their bullpen.

After having retained right-hander Robert Suarez on a five-year deal, the Padres have re-signed reliever Nick Martinez as well.

Martinez had previously opted out of his four-year contract with the Padres, which he had signed last offseason.

But shortly after opting out, Martinez and the Padres came to an agreement on a new contract.

According to Jon Heyman of MLB Network, Martinez’s new contract is for three years and is worth $26 million.

Heyman also reported that the deal includes several bonuses and incentives.

Martinez Stays In San Diego

Martinez was signed last offseason by the Padres after four years playing in Japan.

The veteran right-hander went 4-4 and posted a 3.47 ERA in 47 appearances, 10 of which were starts.

For his career, the 32-year-old has a record of 21-34 and a lifetime ERA of 4.50 in 135 total appearances with the Padres and the Texas Rangers.

San Diego won 89 games during the regular season and captured the second National League Wild Card, eliminating the 101-win New York Mets in the first round and knocking out the 111-win Dodgers in the NLDS.

San Diego fell short against the Philadelphia Phillies in the NLCS, losing in five games.

Martinez made seven appearances during the postseason, losing his only decision but posting an ERA of 0.82.

The Padres have retained two key bullpen pieces for 2023 and now will look to potentially improve other areas of the roster.
