Grupo Bimbo, the Mexico-headquartered bakery and snacks giant, plans to build two new factories in separate US states.
The plans for the sites in Georgia and Ohio were revealed in statements signed off by the individual state governors, with the projects expected to create more than 600 jobs in total.
Grupo Bimbo, the world’s largest bakery group, had not responded to Just Food’s requests for confirmation and comment at the time of publication. The business operates in the US through its Bimbo Bakeries USA subsidiary.
The company is investing US$200m in the Georgia facility, located in the city of Valdosta, Lowndes County, Governor Brian Kemp said. He noted it will be the second plant run by the company in the city, with the addition of 295 jobs.
In Ohio, Grupo Bimbo is building a plant in the city of Zanesville, Muskingham County. The project is supported by JobsOhio, Ohio Southeast Economic Development, the Zanesville-Muskingum County Port Authority, and the Ohio Department of Development.
“The investment being made by Grupo Bimbo in Muskingum County will create 320 new jobs in order to meet the company’s growing consumer demand,” Ohio Governor Mike DeWine said.
In its 2021 fiscal year to 31 December, Grupo Bimbo generated global revenue of MXN348.9bn (US$17.9bn). The North America region – the US and Canada – accounted for MXN176.3bn.
Plans for the new US facilities come a year after Grupo Bimbo acquired popcorn maker Popcornopolis in California. It also bought New York-based cookies makes Emmy’s Organics last year.
The Mexican business recently struck a deal in the UK, snapping up St Pierre Groupe, which also supplies the US market.
