This home was designed by Philip Thrane, a student of Mies van der Rohe, whose much-admired Farnsworth House is a little over an hour away. Like that house, this one was meant to blur the lines between indoors and outdoors, with sheets of glass that offer views of the surrounding woods, giving the main spaces a front-row seat to the changing of seasons. While it feels remarkably private, this property is just 10 minutes from shopping centers with grocery stores and other amenities.

Chicago O’Hare International Airport is about 20 minutes away; downtown Chicago is a 40-minute drive. Milwaukee is about an hour’s drive to the north.

Size: 2,405 square feet

Price per square foot: $457

Indoors: A long driveway leads from the street to the garage at the side of the house. The front door, in the center of the building, opens into a foyer partially enclosed by a built-in room divider. Beyond is an open living area with hardwood floors, a fireplace set in a sand-colored stone wall and floor-to-ceiling windows that offer views of the ever-changing landscape outside.

Another divider separates the living area from the dining room. Both rooms have access to a spacious kitchen that was recently updated with stainless steel appliances and a waterfall island topped with white stone. More windows face the rear patio and the yard and woods beyond.

A hallway off the dining room leads to the primary bedroom, which has patio access and an en suite bathroom with a double vanity and a sleek, glass-walled shower. A sunny home office and a powder room are also on this side of the house.

Two more bedrooms are on the other side of the kitchen. Both are en suite, and one has a sizable walk-in closet.

Outdoor space: The patio behind the house is big enough for a table and chairs on one side and a lounge area on the other. The front and rear yards are landscaped with grass surrounded by trees, and the house sits at the center of the lot. The attached garage holds two cars.

Taxes: $14,532 (estimated) and a $25 monthly homeowner association fee

This townhouse is in a new development on the waterfront, a few blocks from the Savannah Riverwalk and about a mile from the city’s historic district, putting it within walking distance of a number of house museums, small parks and Colonial Park Cemetery, established in the 18th century and turned into a park with walking paths in 1896.

The property is about 20 minutes from Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport and a little less than an hour from Hilton Head Island. Charleston, S.C., and Jacksonville, Fla., are about two hours away.

Size: 2,134 square feet

Price per square foot: $492

Indoors: The building’s facade is sheathed in Queen Anne brick, as are the steps leading up to the home’s covered front entry.

Behind the front door is a large foyer with a dark blue accent wall. Off this space, through a doorway with wrought-iron gates, is a wine-and-cigar room with a refrigerator and built-in storage.

From the foyer, a stairway leads up to an open living space with dark wood floors on the second level. Facing the back of the building is a sitting area with a fireplace and two sets of French doors opening to a deck. This space flows into a dining area and a kitchen with stainless steel appliances, white cabinetry and a center island that seats four. Also in this part of the house is a powder room with blue wainscoting.

Up another flight of stairs, on the third floor, are two bedrooms. The primary suite has a bedroom with room for a king-size bed, a walk-in closet and a bathroom with a glass-walled shower. The other bedroom has a built-in Murphy bed and an en suite bathroom with a combined tub and shower. A closet with a washer and dryer is off the hallway.

Outdoor space: The deck off the second-floor sitting area is surrounded by a wood fence, with space for a dining table, chairs and a barbecue. An attached garage at the entry level has two parking spots; there is room for two more cars in the driveway. Amenities to be added to the complex in the next year include a fitness center, a pool and a rooftop deck.

Taxes: $7,164 (estimated) and a $250 monthly homeowner association fee

The town of Manchester is a popular weekend getaway spot, thanks to nearby outlet stores and abundant fall foliage. This house is less than a mile from the Manchester Village Historic District, where some of the many 19th-century homes are run as bed-and-breakfasts. Another overnight option is the Equinox hotel, a resort and spa with its own golf course. The town is also home to Burr and Burton Academy, a coed boarding school for students in ninth through 12th grade, founded in 1829.

Bennington, Vt., is half an hour away; driving to Albany, N.Y., takes about an hour and a half.

Size: 2,400 square feet

Price per square foot: $456

Indoors: Behind a white picket fence running along the sidewalk, a path leads to the front door, which opens into a tiled foyer with a staircase to the second level.

To the right is a living room with wide-plank floors and street-facing windows. Behind it is a cozy family room with a wood-burning fireplace.

At the back of the house is an updated eat-in kitchen with Vermont slate countertops and a Sub-Zero refrigerator. Also on this level are a study that gets good natural light; a powder room; and an enclosed porch that is winterized, making it usable year-round.

All three bedrooms are upstairs. The primary suite has a bathroom with a porcelain pedestal sink and a deep bathtub. Two guest rooms are at the other end of the hall; they share a hallway bathroom. The second-floor landing is lined with built-in bookshelves and has a nook that would be ideal for a comfortable chair and ottoman.

Outdoor space: The lawn behind the house stretches to a grove of mature trees. The property has been professionally landscaped, and there are views of mountains from several vantage points. The circular driveway holds three cars.

Taxes: $8,909 (estimated)
