John Tyson, the newly-appointed CFO of US meat heavyweight Tyson Foods, was arrested in the early hours of Sunday morning (6 November) after being found asleep in a stranger’s house.

He now faces charges for allegedly committing criminal trespassing and public intoxication offences. He was arrested by local police officers in the town of Fayetteville, Arkansas, the state where Tyson has its headquarters.

Local and national media outlets in the US have seen a Fayetteville police report that stated a college-aged female allegedly found Mr Tyson, who she did not know, asleep in her bed upon returning home. The woman called the police, fearing a potential burglary, and they found Mr Tyson asleep at the premises. He was said to be unresponsive and was identified by ID found in his clothes which had been strewn on the floor.

The police report cited “[Mr] Tyson’s unlawful presence in a house, where he was not invited, paired with the odour of intoxicants and his general demeanour when confronted by uniformed officers”.

Just Food has seen the charge sheet from the Sheriff’s Office in Washington County, Arkansas, which confirmed the Tyson CFO’s arrest and the charges he now faces. It said the Tyson finance chief, who was released on Sunday evening on payment of a US$415 bond, is due to appear in Fayetteville District Court on 1 December to answer the allegations.

Mr Tyson, who was previously the meat giant’s chief sustainability officer, became its CFO at the end of September when his predecessor Stewart Glendinning moved across to lead the company’s prepared-foods division. He joined the company in 2019 after working in investment banking, private equity and venture capital.

The 32-year-old executive is a fourth-generation member of the family that founded Tyson Foods. He shares his name with Tyson Foods chairman John H. Tyson, as well as the company’s founder John W. Tyson.

Just Food has asked Tyson Foods, outside of US office hours, for its response to the incident.
