Cincinnati Reds star Joey Votto will have shoulder surgery on Friday and miss the remainder of the season.
Votto made the announcement following a 1-0 win by the Reds over the Phillies on Wednesday. The soon-to-be 39-year-old did not appear in the game but did play on Tuesday.
“I have a rotator cuff tear,” Votto said, adding that the tear stems from an injury in 2015. “It had been lingering for a while and I’ve had a difficult time with it.”

The news comes following an eventful week for Votto. Last Thursday, he played first base for the Reds in MLB’s annual Field of Dreams game, which he called “an exceptional moment in my life.” Then on Sunday, he played in career-game No. 1989 to pass Hall of Famer Larry Walker for most by a Canadian-born player.
The former NL MVP and six-time all-star has certainly showed his age this season, hitting just .205/.319/.370 with 11 home runs in 91 games. But he remains a star in the game with his contagious positivity and growing social media presence.
Votto has one more year remaining on his contract and is set to earn $25 million in 2023.
