Halep tops Haddad Maia to win third National Bank Open women’s singles title

TORONTO — Simona Halep claimed her third career National Bank Open women’s singles title with a 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 win over Beatriz Haddad Maia during Sunday’s final.

The 30-year-old Romanian, who has now captured a total of 24 WTA Tour singles titles, was also victorious at the tournament in 2016 and 2018.

After a shaky start down 0-3 in the opening frame, Halep bounced back to win six consecutive games and take the first set.

Haddad Maia led 4-0 in the second to frustrate her opponent again before Halep won her first game of the set. The deficit was too much to overcome, however, leading to a decisive third stanza.

Hubert Hurkacz faces Pablo Carreno Busta in the National Bank men’s final in Montreal. Watch live on Sportsnet ONE and Sportsnet NOW starting at 4 p.m. ET / 1 p.m. PT.
