The New York Yankees lost Thursday’s doubleheader against the Houston Astros.

The first game was thrown by left-hander Jordan Montgomery, and he kept things close for as long as he could.

Houston managed to walk-off the Yanks in the bottom of the ninth, though.

In fact, every time the opposing team notches a walk-off win, Montgomery is the Yankees’ starter.

“Jordan Montgomery has been the starting pitcher in all 5 of the Yankees walk-off losses this season (h/t @CharlieRGa). That’s the most games started by any pitcher that ended in a walk-off loss this season,” MLB analyst Katie Sharp tweeted.

Of course, this is more randomness and some bad luck, because Montgomery has done nothing wrong for the Yanks.

In fact, he is having what is shaping up as the best season of his career.

A Top-Notch Season So Far

The 29-year-old southpaw has a rock-solid 3.24 ERA in 108.1 innings so far.

That would be a career-best mark, and he is also on his way to establish a new high in innings pitched, too.

In 19 starts, he is 3-2 and has struck out 7.31 hitters per nine innings.

That number is not particularly high, but given that he rarely hurts himself with walks (1.66 per nine), he can make it work.

Montgomery has 1.5 Wins Above Replacement, or WAR, and projects to finish somewhere around 3.0.

The Yankees can’t complain because they have been getting very good performances from Montgomery.

He provided one yesterday in a tough assignment: the Astros.

He pitched 6.1 innings and allowed just two runs, walking one and fanning eight batters.

In reality, and being fair, he is far from a bad omen for the Yanks.

Luck works in mysterious ways.
