Petry played eight seasons with the Canadiens after the Habs acquired the American blueliner in a trade deadline deal with the Edmonton Oilers.
The 34-year-old picked up eight goals and 21 assists in 68 games for the last-placed Canadiens in the 2021-22 season.
Poehling recorded 17 points with a minus-21 rating in 57 appearances for Montreal last season.
In return, the Canadiens receive a left-handed defender in Matheson, who tallied a career-high 31 points in 2021-22, and additional capital for next year’s draft.
