Evander Kane has opted to return to the Edmonton Oilers next season, agreeing to a four-year deal worth $20.5 million.
Kane announced the deal on social media saying he was pleased to be returning to Edmonton while providing the details of his contract that carries a $5.125 million cap hit.
Kane signed with Edmonton in January after the San Jose Sharks terminated the remainder of his seven-year, $49 million contract for violating COVID-19 protocols while in the American Hockey League. Kane has challenged the Sharks’ decision by filing a grievance through the NHL Players’ Association.
“Throughout the last 12 months there have been lots of road blocks, tons of adversity and many tough days. I’m grateful for the tremendous amount of support from family, friends, teammates, and others who have helped me stay strong through those difficult times,” Kane wrote in the tweet Tuesday night.
“… A big part of my decision to stay in Edmonton was because of the opportunity given to me only seven months ago but also the chance to be a part of a championship team. I want to win, and I believe after signing this deal, we will be able to add the right pieces along with myself to accomplish that goal, a championship.”
Earlier last season, he was suspended by San Jose for 21 games for submitting a fake vaccine card.
Kane topped 20 goals for the eighth time in 13 NHL seasons by scoring 22 goals and 39 points in 43 games with Edmonton. He added 13 goals in 15 playoff games for the Oilers as they made it to the Western Conference Final.
Originally drafted by the Atlanta Thrashers fourth overall in 2009, Kane has 545 points in 812 regular-season games in his career. Kane has played in Atlanta/Winnipeg, Buffalo, San Jose, and Edmonton.
