Max Scherzer made his return to the New York Mets last night and did not disappoint.

But staff ace Jacob deGrom isn’t too far behind.

deGrom has been out since the start of the season thanks to a stress reaction in his right shoulder.

He was scratched from his spring training start against the St. Louis Cardinals, and he hasn’t pitched since then.

But he’s working his way back and should be close to returning at some point.

Mets insider Anthony DiComo revealed on Twitter that deGrom’s next rehab start will be on Friday, and that he will be aiming for around 40 pitches in that start.

deGrom Making Progress

That’s progress.

The Mets have been without their two aces for a good chunk of time.

Now that one is back and the other isn’t far behind, there has to be a sense of optimism for the Mets and their fans as they await the day when the team can finally boast deGrom and Scherzer as part of the same rotation.

Coming into the year, the Mets rotation looked like one of the best in all of baseball.

Soon, we may be able to see that rotation at full strength for the first time all season long.

The 34-year-old deGrom went 7-2 in 2021 with a microscopic 1.08 ERA in 15 starts before injuries derailed his season.

He has yet to pitch in a major league game that isn’t spring training since his season came to an end last year.

But it appears that deGrom is progressing well and is ready to make yet another rehab start.

We’ll see how that one goes.

If all goes well, his path back to the Mets becomes much clearer.
